Liberland is a sovereign state located on the west bank of the Danube River between Croatia and Serbia. It is the first micronation to accept bitcoin back in 2015, fulfilling the purpose of its president, Witt Jedlika, who is responsible for this “slice” of geography, diplomacy and sovereignty. Liberland, as Jedlika assures, stands as the “most free nation in the world” and upholds the ideals of freedom for its citizens.
Joy Langenbrunner, the deputy representative of The Free Republic of Liberland in the United States, told during the interview that Jedliska had gone online to search for “unclaimed land”. He realized that a small island in the middle of the Danube River was unclaimed, so he deliberately went there on April 13, 2015 – Thomas Jefferson’s birthday.
On April 13, 2022, the Free Republic of Liberland celebrated the seventh anniversary of its founding:

Back in 2015 President Jedlica began accepting bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, partly in hopes of bringing various investors to the country and developing business opportunities founded on the decentralized and sovereignty-protecting philosophy of bitcoin.
Last November, The Liberland Aid Foundation donated more than one bitcoin to the Benjamin Bloom National Children’s Hospital to show that bitcoin could unite countries without restrictions.
Langenbrunner pointed out that when he went to El Salvador in November 2021 for the Adopting Bitcoin Lightning Summit, President Jedliska actually crossed the border into El Salvador by presenting his passport from Liberland and he stamped it.
During our interview Langenbrunner explained how difficult it was for a sovereign country to create an official bank account – but bitcoin was the way they were able to get most of their money and manage their financial affairs.
Langenbrunner explained why they are here today is because of that funding, because most of the money coming in is bitcoin. He said he found ways to do PayPal and other platforms but it gave him problems.
He added that he is “extremely optimistic” not only on everyone involved with the country, but also on bitcoiners who know that the only way the country can do this is through bitcoin.
He also mentioned that in 2015, Liberland needed to increase its assets and so Liberland adopted bitcoin as its main reserve asset. Those who became involved with bitcoin early on could also see the possible future of the nation. In addition he mentioned the game theory of increasing the price and getting more people involved, thus increasing adoption. “Our country’s reserves,” he said, “are increasing” which means they will have more money for more projects, such as is happening in El Salvador.
Langenbrunner also stated that he actually built his first physical settlement in Serbia, which borders his land. However, it can be seen as a form of government in exile.
Bitcoiners need a position they can call home. Because there is a need in the market, naturally the ownership of the territory would become insurance against external forces. This particular example is in Europe, but it can happen anywhere in the world as there is a demand for bitcoin-affiliated people who have this type of mindset and cherish these freedom-loving ideals.
Finally, Langenbrunner, like Bukele, mentioned the dream of possibly building cities of Alexandria for bitcoiners, where they can feel at home and be protected.
