John Riccitello, CEO of Unity, one of the leading real-time 3D engine providers, has predicted that the Internet will become part of the metaverse over the next several years. The executive predicted that most websites would become Metaverse destinations and that the transition would be mostly complete by the year 2030. However, according to Ricitillo, the heritage sites will still be around at that time.
Unity CEO states internet will be VR-based in future
Many companies are now interested in how the metaverse could be a part of our lives in the near future. Unity, a company specializing in providing real-time 3D solutions, predicts that much of the Internet will be metaverse-based by 2030. The company’s CEO, John Riccitello, said that 2D websites will turn into metaverse destinations that are more interconnected. The CEO made the remarks last week during a keynote at AWE, an augmented reality program.
As predicted, there will essentially be three types of web destinations. First, sites that will be fully Metaverse-integrated will be identified as “places where you can live and reside.” The second type would blend real-world locations with expanded capabilities, and another class of sites would be “a small part of a layer on top of today’s world”, enhancing it.
These metaverse experiences will be able to be fully enjoyed with enough hardware, but other, less capable hardware, such as PCs and mobile phones, will have to be optimized as well.
Realtime 3D Experience and Metaverse
The Unity CEO also commented on the importance of the real-time feature in these Metaverse destinations, meaning that each interaction with these worlds is experienced for the first time, unlike in the movies, where the interactions are always the same.
This is where real-time engine providers enter the platform, providing designers with the tools to create and enhance such metaverse experiences. In an interview, Riccitello said that more than 50% of the real-time 3D experiences on the market are created using Unity’s products. The company’s recent purchases, which include the Ziva Dynamics and Weta Digital acquisitions, are aimed at further improving the company’s technology to provide greater immersion in its real-time products.
Unity isn’t the only real-time engine company interested in the Metaverse. Its direct competitor, Unreal Engine 5, developed by Epic Games, is also a competitor with the aim of providing high-quality worlds and interactions for Metaverse applications.
