In the midst of its ongoing offensive from the Russian Federation, the Ukrainian government wants to portray some wartime moments to show the world in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Thus, the nation continues to employ the asset class to help fund its defence.
Russo-Ukraine war in the form of NFT
The surge in popularity of the NFT sector last year has sent countless musicians, players, businesses and other celebrities and prominent figures onboard. However, Russia’s decision to launch a “special military operation” in Ukraine prompted the latter’s government to attempt to use the digital archive to aid its struggling defense.
First, Ukraine wanted to channel some of the proceeds from cryptocurrency donations, which are now worth tens of millions of dollars. However, it failed to do so and decided to go with the NFT route.
As The Guardian reports, the country’s Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation Alex Bornyakov has provided more details on the matter. He stressed that the digital archive “will be like a museum of the Russian-Ukrainian war. We want to tell the world in NFT format.”
The politician denied certain assumptions that the crypto proceeds would be used to buy weapons. Instead, he promised that he would go for defense equipment and fund media activities.
“We’re buying night-vision goggles, optics, helmet, bulletproof vest.” – she added.
cryptopotato Last week it reported plans of former heavyweight boxing champion – Wladimir Klitschko – to launch an NFT collection to raise money for his homeland Ukraine.
Russian social propaganda incompetent?
Before invading Ukraine, the Russian government launched a media campaign justifying its future actions and explaining to locals why it had to do what it had planned to do. Bornyakov termed this approach as one of Russia’s most powerful weapons and believes that global brands such as Facebook and Instagram have done the right thing by blocking access to such content.
“We have convinced social media platforms, international companies to either block Russia, move out of Russia, or completely change our information policy.” – she added.
It is worth noting that parts of the crypto industry took a similar approach, with Coinbase blocking 25,000 Russian addresses that were allegedly linked to illegal activities.
