IThis is an opinion editorial by Anthony Feliciano, a bitcoin event organizer and father of two.
On June 19, 2022, we will celebrate Father’s Day and many of us will be wondering what do you get from your father who has everything?
Well, if he’s a boomer, I’m sure he doesn’t have bitcoin. If your dad is like me and the rest of my family, he probably isn’t interested in bitcoin. To this day, when I call my parents they ask me how “Bit-Con” is going. To his credit, like a lot of Boomers—as well as most members of Congress, Warren Buffetts alike—they’ll then throw a smile on him. They correct themselves to say “Bitcoin”, but I laugh when I hear it. He has good intentions, so I appreciate it nonetheless.
As a new bitcoin-block-minted dad, (I have two kids under the age of two), I’ve taken liberties and nicknamed his generation as “covenials” (feel free to use that). Granted, and any parent who has had a child in the last two years or so will certainly grow out of it. With little kids like me, they won’t be able to send me sessions for Father’s Day this year, and that’s okay. It’s my duty and any other father out there – new, old or just to be a father – to pile on our kids.
I was going to make this an open letter to my kids, but for this year’s Father’s Day, it’s better to address all the bitcoin fathers out there. It is not only our duty, but it is our obligation as fathers to continue to pile on our children, whatever their age, for them. I look at my children and the world today, and wonder what their future will be like five, 10, 20, 50 years from now. I can’t predict the future or begin to know its shape, but what I do know today is that bitcoin gives me a sense of hope and some degree of freedom from current economic and geopolitical events, because I Am able to pass some value on them. If I am able to teach them what I have learned down the rabbit hole, they too have a future.
To all the bitcoin fathers out there, take the time to reflect on your journey down the bitcoin rabbit hole and how you will be able to share that knowledge with your kids. They may not get it today, but at some point they will. Take the time to talk about the ethos surrounding not only bitcoin, but applications, how to spend, transact, send, receive, and more. Whatever we are able to teach them today can only be of future value to them.
As a father, it is our responsibility to prepare our children for success. No matter what their interests are, make sure bitcoin is part of the conversation. It is our duty, not only to give our children a choice of the future, but to share the knowledge they need to succeed in it. Only with our knowledge of bitcoin are we able to share with them the way forward. No matter how this bitcoin social experiment plays out in the future, wouldn’t it be amazing to hear your kids say, “Yeah my dad/grandfather was part of its start”?
Happy Father’s Day to all you bitcoin dads.
