Seven “shadow forks” allowed synchronization problems to be identified.
Ms. Christine Kim, Analyst at Galaxy Digital, has taken to Twitter to share a thread on Ethereum’s All Core Dev Call #141 meeting results. According to the thread, the last “shadow fork” wasn’t all roses due to node synchronization problems.

Namely, as a result of issues with the Eragon and Hyperledger Besu nodes, more than 25% of network participants were removed from consensus immediately after merge activation.
Additionally, some issues were identified regarding the “Bonsai Trees” data storage design and the Nethermind-Teku client pairing. Broadly speaking, the issues were not related to the merge specifications; Instead, he highlighted that the participating teams are not prepared for the upcoming upgrade.
As previously covered by U.Today, the first “shadow forks” were activated on the Ethereum (ETH) network in mid-April 2022. They “update” the “network structure” in parallel with the Ethereum (ETH) mainnet and do not affect ETH transfers in a meaningful way.
Sepulia Merge Expected on July 6th
Ms. Kim said all participating teams are fixing the issues as they launch the eighth Shadow Fork next week.
Also, they shared an estimated timeline for the next important event in preparation for the merge, i.e., its activation in the Cepolia testnet. The devs are “optimistic” and are going to launch the merge on the second major testnet on July 6th, 2022.
It should be noted that Cepolia will be one of two testnets (along with Goerly) that will remain active after the Beacon Chain launch. The Kiln, Rinkeby and Ropsten testnets will be demolished.
Furthermore, on June 29, Ethereum (ETH) is likely to undergo the last “difficulty bomb delay” in its history, as previously covered by U.Today.
