An Elon Musk deepfake is promoting a fraudulent cryptocurrency platform
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has reacted to one of his deepfake videos purportedly promoting a fraudulent crypto project.
In a recently posted tweet, the billionaire said it was “definitely” not him.
The deepfake video that went viral on Twitter earlier this week is aimed at attracting investors to invest in a trading platform that offers 30% returns on crypto deposits.
Many Dogecoin fans took issue with the poor quality of the video, claiming that Musk’s voice sounds robotic and fuzzy. One Twitter user tweeted, “This is an awfully deep fake.”
Dogecoin co-founder Billy Marcus said that people who are so foolish as to fall into such deception deserve to be stripped of their money.A deepfake is a piece of synthetic media that has been manipulated to convincingly make someone do something that didn’t actually happen in real life.
Producing high quality clones requires expensive computational resources. They are usually created with the help of a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN).
With deepfakes becoming more and more sophisticated, there is an urgent need for reliable detection tools that can be used to find manipulated media.
