According to 2018 Tesla Model 3 owner, Siraj Rawal, he mined up to $800 per month in crypto assets with his hacked-out electric car. Similarly, Tesla Model S owner Chris Alessi tethered a Bitmain Antminer S9 to his car’s electrical system to mine bitcoin, and he also mined Monero with the car’s internal computer.
Tesla Owners Mining Bitcoin, Ethereum and Monero
This week, two Tesla owners explained how they converted their cars to mine digital currency. According to Siraj Rawal, he connected graphics processing units (GPUs) to his 2018 Tesla Model 3 to mine crypto assets with his car. While the modification to the Tesla system voids their warranty, Raval insists that it is “worth it” and claims to have $800 per month in Ethereum (ETH) during last year’s Ether price high.
Chris Alesi, an electric car dealer from Wisconsin, started doing the same thing in 2018. Alesi has been tinkering with such ideas for some time, and he operates a YouTube channel called “K-Man Auto” that works on custom electronic vehicles. “I love electricity. I love chanting, making stuff. You give me an electric motor, I give you a finished product,” Alessi told CNBC on Jan. 8.
Alesi claims he took advantage of a power inverter and a Bitmain Antminer S9, and connected them directly to his Tesla Model S battery to mine bitcoin (BTC). Furthermore, Alesi also revealed that he leverages Tesla’s onboard internal firmware for mining crypto assets such as Monero (XMR). “It was no big deal,” Alessi said during her interview. “I could run mining programs within the browser,” he further commented.
Electric Vehicle Company Daymak’s Electric Car Built to Mine Crypto, BMW i8 Mines Ethereum
Raval has also hacked the internal firmware to mine crypto to his Tesla Model 3, and he said the process was the most profitable method along with using the GPU. Alesi and Raval are not the only ones who have thought about mining digital assets with an electric vehicle. Last June, Canada-based electric vehicle company Daymak revealed plans to launch an electric car called the Spiritus capable of mining cryptocurrencies.
In January last year, publication PC Gamer reported that Simon Byrne’s BMW i8 electric battery could mine Ethereum (ETH) with the system. Byron’s car used a total of six Nvidia RTX 3080 GPUs to mine the second major crypto asset. According to Bayern, they hacked their hybrid-electric BMW i8 with crypto miners “just to annoy gamers”.
