Hundreds of Brooklyn Residents Attend Bitcoin Academy – Some Attendees Enroll in Grants for $1,000 in Bitcoin
During the first week of June, Bitcoin.com News reported Jack Dorsey and Jay-Z teaming up to launch a Bitcoin Academy in Brooklyn for residents of Mercy House. A report by Business Insider reported that hundreds of people were seen in the academy’s classes. “The Mercy residents showed up,” Jay-Z’s mother, Gloria Carter, told the publication. “More than 350 people who attended Bitcoin Academy classes told us that this education is important to them – and it matters,” she said.
The report further discussed the project with a Marcy House resident who attended the classes. In addition, at the end of the course, residents of Bedford-Stuyvesant can enroll in a grant that gives each individual $1,000 in bitcoin (BTC) sent to their CashApp or MUN wallet. The 12-week educational course was free exclusively for Marcy House residents in Brooklyn. Mercy resident Mariella Regalado said the academy reminded her of when she watched Jay-Z grow up in the neighborhood.
“I remember when I was little, growing up in this project, [Jay-Z] And his team would come and give us toys and things like that,” Regalado told Business Insider. “My friends and I would call it this kind of ‘hood philanthropy,’ – so to me, it’s kind of an evolution of that.” Regalado further elaborated that the academy offered free daycare for her daughter, and that as a single mother she was able to attend courses. Regalado added:
[The classes were] Purely this fun, educational trip that I got to do with my neighbors. always seemed like [we were] At a family dinner, and like the cousin who discovered bitcoin, telling everyone else about it.
Bitcoin Academy instructor breaks it down into ‘a vernacular that others can understand’
Brooklyn’s Bitcoin Academy was also supported by Crypto Blockchain Plug (Naja Jay Roberts) and Black Bitcoin Billionaire (Lamar Wilson). Wilson was an instructor and the person involved with Block CEO Jack Dorsey to propose the program. Courses taught included topics such as “Career in Crypto,” “Wealth Creation and Wealth,” “Bitcoin and Taxes,” and “Why Decentralization Matters.”
“At times, the information does not reach our community. Not because people are being deliberately discriminated against, it’s because they are intentionally not thinking about getting the information out there. And so someone has to do it by lifting the mantle,” Wilson said. The Brooklyn Bitcoin Academy instructor said:
Because I understand the information and I can break it down into a local language that other people can understand, especially people from where I am, I feel it is almost my obligation to make sure I get the information to them. , and don’t like advising them to buy bitcoin or trying to make them invest all their money or anything like that. It really is, let me provide the information and allow you, as a very intelligent person, to make your own decisions.
